Top picks for getting out Nov. 15 – 21 including Femme Wave, Chotto Desh, New Works Calgary and OK Go

Remember the days when I used to try to do a “Top 5 picks?” It’s impossible to do – there is so much happening in this city it’s ridiculous. Awesome ridiculous.

Thursday: Femme Wave, Calgary’s only multi-disciplinary feminist arts festival kicks off today and runs until Sunday with no shortage of amazing bands, workshops, art, film and comedy on offer. These events take place at various venues around downtown, so be sure to check out the schedule to see what’s what. Chotto Desh by Akram Khan Company is a family-oriented dance production taking place at the Bella Concert Hall tonight until Friday, and down at the Ironwood you can take in An Evening with John Wort Hannam, Steve Dawson & Matt Pattershuk. Literary types can head to Shelf Life Books to catch Single Onion #154 with Jenna Butler, Weyman Chan, Laurie Anne Fuhr & Joshua Whitehead as well.

Friday: Ghost River Theatre hosts Tasting Scotch 2018 at Last Best Brewing & Distillery – this is more a sensory performance and experience than just a boozy night out, so go and test your senses! If you’re looking to take in some dance, Trip the Light Dance Company presents Iambic at the West Village Theatre, and New Works Calgary & Vertical City Performance bring us Did you mean rocket? at cSpace King Edward, an immersive exploration of fully embodied listening. Yes!

Saturday: The 13th Annual Handmade Here Artist Collective Sale will be held at the Triwood Community Hall, and TONTO Week at Studio Bell continues and tonight catch a screening of Phantom of the Paradise. I would for sure be there singing along, if I weren’t already going to see Calgary Opera’s production of Romeo & Juliette at the Jubilee. Both are great choices. What else is happening Saturday? OK Go – The Live Video Tour takes place at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. That’s a lot.

Sunday: Navigating the Arena with Nicole Owen is a workshop geared towards women in the film industry, taking place at cSpace King Edward at 1 p.m. Greg Million is in town to discuss The Sentient Warrior: Redefining Masculinity at the Croatian Canadian Cultural Club, the Calgary Bach Choir presents Bach & Sons: The Milan Bach at Knox United Church, while Walter Parks performs with Danielle French over at the Ironwood.

Wednesday: It’s Hey Ocean! at the Commonwealth, and there are still a few (very few) tickets left to see the early show of Bob the Drag Queen — Crazy Black Lady at The Palace.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
