Top picks for getting out Jan. 30 – Feb. 5 including Jr. Gone Wild, Particle + Wave Festival, Exposure Photography Festival and Halloween in January

Oh, hi there, everyone. I’m noticing that it’s feeling a bit prematurely spring-like, and we’re all trying to get out of the house as much as we can, which is great! So much is happening this weekend! Case in point:

Thursday: The Particle + Wave Media Arts Festival is a unique three-day event celebrating the critical innovation and creativity present in the media arts community, and it all kicks off today, at a bunch of different venues — check their website for info! Singer-songwriter Murray Fitch plays Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar on the Music Mile, and Le Salon des Refusés #4: Play Dead will be performed by Dancing Monkey Laboratories at Cafe Koi. Over at the Palomino it’s Eamon McGrath, Amy Nelson & Lucid 44.

Friday: The Exposure Photography Festival launches this weekend at various venues around downtown, so check out their site for deets on seeing some of the great photographic art this city has to offer. And hey, it’s Halloween in January! Well, kind of. Head to Monster Mini Golf on Friday to take in The Devil’s Sons, 5 Cent Freakshow and more more MORE! (Had to type that in a monster truck voice in my head for some reason.) Tom Jackson and Ray Cooper will perform at the Dalhousie Community Centre, The Redline Trio with Steve Hudson will be at the King Eddy, and Jr. Gone Wild with The Ramblin’ Ambassadors and Forbidden Dimension are at the Palomino so Friday is pretty packed!

Saturday: Kill Floor — a Project by Kyle Marks features work by artists Jeff Bray and Dallas Seitz and will be on display ONE NIGHT ONLY on the top floor of the Crossroads Market. Calgary Opera presents the highly anticipated (by me) Norma at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, and Song of the Phoenix — 2020 Calgary Chinese New Year Concert takes place at The GRAND. Vertigo Theatre’s Whispers in the Dark runs at, of course, Vertigo Theatre, and The Kinkonauts present Improv! The Musical at the Rose Room, Alexandra Centre. Over at the King Eddy, it’s Devin Cooper with Flaysher

Monday: Off the CUFF presents Color Out of Space starring Nicolas Cage at the Globe Theatre.

Wednesday: Head to the Stride Gallery if you’re downtown during the day to check out Jolie Bird’s latest show, The discipline of constructing. Fire Exit Theatre presents their latest production, Eleemosynary at the Engineered Air Theatre, and Chris Gordon is over at the Laugh Shop.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
