U of C students offer open house on nuclear power

Students from the University of Calgary’s Environmental Science program are offering a free open house on Wednesday April 30 to inform members of the public about the pros and cons of nuclear power.

The students have spent the last eight months researching the possibility of using nuclear power in the Peace River area of northern Alberta. Bruce Power an Ontario-based company wants to build a 1100 megawatt nuclear plant about 500 kilometres northwest of Edmonton but the plan has encountered stiff opposition and was further mired in controversy recently when the provincial Liberals asked why Randy Dawson the man who ran Premier Ed Stelmach’s election campaign is lobbying the government on behalf of the company.

The open house which runs from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in room 162 of the university’s Earth Sciences building will include student presentations and a discussion period.

The province recently appointed a panel to prepare “a comprehensive and objective report” on nuclear energy for the government. The panel is expected to submit its report by the fall. (JK)
